Race three was next as is so often the case and this provided the interesting spectacle of Aymane Yacine coming through from the second row to snatch the win from the very mouth of Sam Bennigsen. Another Sam followed very closely behind, a mere tenth in fact, and this was Sam Lawrence who earned eleven points for his trouble. Ryan Cummings enjoyed a similarly close scrap with Stuart Anderson for fourth and fifth. I wonder if having your dad win the Le Mans 24hr race puts any kind of pressure on the younger family member. It certainly didn’t seem to affect Sam Brabham who sailed to the line with a few tenths in hand over a similarly inspired Ivan May-Jones. The school custard yellow form of Stuart Anderson poured across the finish line next and it was a good job he did or Stephen Essex would have secured the place. Aymane Yacine powered his way up from P10 to complete this roll of top five honour.
In the next clash of the titans it was poleman Toby Cook who emerged victorious if only by the merest sliver of time. The guy right up his back bumper was Aymane Yacine who had started right behind the leader and finished just six tenths behind. Keiran Tyson started his charge from the back of the grid but tucked in behind the lead duo for a pleasing eleven points. A point adrift was Ryan Cummings who just scraped home by a nose in front of Stuart Anderson.
After remaining dry all day the sky finally looked as though precipitation was imminent as we prepared the grid for the A final. Still, it caught me ought when it happened. Before that though there was drama when Tom Hill got spun out at the first hairpin when another driver out braked himself. Tom now had a mountain of K2 proportions to climb which he set about with the determination and dignity that marks the difference between a true professional and a hobbyist. He climbed back to a very impressive seventh at the flag but I guess that was a far cry from his target. Out front we were watching a terrific scrap for the lead when suddenly the race leader Ivan May-Rain spotted the drops on his visor and dove deep into Conways. The boy has gone mad I thought, not yet aware of the rain, until I saw Keiran Tyson and Aymane Yacine understeering badly in the same corner. Ivan then took control of the race in true rain meister fashion and pulled out an impressive four lap lead. Keiran managed to hang on to second place but found it far harder on a damp track. Toby Cook climbed high up the order and then in a near repeat of his morning he spun out and fell to the back of the pack.
At the line it was Ivan by a country mile and Keiran for the silver. Right on his tail came the bronze winning form of Aymane Yacine who has very quickly risen through the ranks to become a front runner. Driver of the day in my eyes was Seth James who you remember had already won the 8-13 section and now crossed for a very close fourth in this meeting. Jamie Cummings deserves a pat on the back for fifth and I’m delighted to see Sam Brabham now up and scrapping in the A final where he finished sixth. The unlucky Tom Hill crossed in seventh where he was ahead of Nathan Baily, Sam Lawrence, Carl Williams, Ryan Cummings, Harry Sutton and the twice unlucky Toby Cook.
